Christina Romer Serves Up Dismal News
Dana Milbank, Washington PostLunch at the National Press Club on Wednesday caused some serious indigestion. It wasn't the food; it was the entertainment. Christina Romer, chairman of President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, was giving what was billed as her "valedictory" before she returns to teach at Berkeley, and she used the swan song to establish four points, each more unnerving than the last:She had no idea how bad the economic collapse would be. She still doesn't understand exactly why it was so bad. The response to the collapse was inadequate. And she doesn't have much of an...Newsheadlines

SEC Gets It Right on New Investor Rules
Marty Robins, AOL NewsYou may think the topic of "proxy access" has nothing to do with you, if you've even heard of the term. But if you own stock, directly or through mutual funds, want to retire someday or want to keep your job, you'd be wrong ... way wrong. The topic and recently announced changes in Securities and Exchange Commission rules have everything to do with the health of our economy. We've seen far too many corporate debacles as a result of poor corporate decision-making, which have laid low our economy and cost us trillions to try to fix. Why net-neutrality rules should be applied equally
Have Google and Verizon got a deal for you! The Marmota project shows off what we can expect from augmented reality in the next few years
Filed under: Fun, Utilities, Mobile
Augmented reality, at the moment, is a bit kitsch. It's a technology that's been threatening to emerge for years but, like "virtual reality," it's always been held back by technological constraints. Until the last year or two, most AR and VR implementations involved you wheeling around a laptop (or strapping it to your back!) -- and VR still requires a silly pair of glasses. That's all about to change, however, with the gigahertz-in-our-pocket smartphones.
In the next few years, almost everyone in the Western world will have a handheld device that's capable of displaying rich 3D graphics. GPS will pinpoint your location and elevation in real-time, and 3G and 4G (5, 6, 7 ...) networks will make both topological data and the Internet's wealth of contextual data available at any time and any place. But enough talking, let me show you what I'm talking about: check out the Marmota project. It hides behind such subtitles as "visual environment monitoring" and "semantic image labelling," but in essence, it's the next step in augmented reality.
The best thing would be for you to read through the Marmota website and check out the pictures, but I'll give you an example of what Marmota will let you do. Right now, you can pull down Flickr photos from a given geolocation -- that's pretty cool, ... but that's also about it for the current state of augmented reality. With Marmota, you point your camera at a landscape (or cityscape!), and the server sends you topological and contextual information for the scene you're looking at. So, if you hold your smartphone up in front of a mountain, the mountain's name and elevation are shown on the screen (here's a larger version of the image above) -- the software can also show you roads, landmarks, and so on. Using topological information, the 2D image on your phone can even be converted into a 3D image (watch the video, it's very cool), and presumably you can then see over a range of mountains and down into the valley beyond!
The coolest thing is, this technology is actually ready to go. The project has used Android phones as its test bed, and the app should be available in the "immediate future." I'll keep you updated and bring you a proper review as soon as possible.

FCC tears apart the new iPod touch, while iFixit wistfully looks on
We're not quite sure when the Federal Communications Commission got into the habit of tearing devices limb from limb after testing their wireless radiation levels, but we have to say we're loving the trend -- and there's quite nothing like peering into the juicy innards of a new Apple device. Here, the FCC got its greasy paws on the new Retina Display-packing iPod touch, aka "Apple A1367," and in the gallery below you can see exactly where Cupertino keeps that A4 processor, 3.44 watt-hour battery, internal antenna, and 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz WiFi. Ke$ha Promises No Jazz On Her New Album
'I wouldn't say 'mature,' because that sounds boring,' Ke$ha says about the sound of her next record.By James Montgomery
Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News
Ke$ha's Animal album was just released in January, but that doesn't mean she's not already thinking ahead to her next album, even if it's royally screwing up her sleep schedule.
"I'm always writing and kind of thinking of the next step. I'm still executing this record properly onstage, but the next record is definitely on my mind, and potentially in the works soon," she told MTV News on Monday at the Casio "Shock the World" party in New York. "I was just in Tokyo and I couldn't sleep. I woke up at four in the morning, and I had this idea — [for] the whole video and the track and the song and who I wanted to collaborate with — so I spent like seven hours making a really horrible beat on 'Garage Band' and singing and rapping into my computer."
Hmmm ... that doesn't sound very country to us. Still, on her new songs, Ke$ha is looking to push the envelope a tad, which means that she's trying to move away from her hard-partying ways. Sort of.
"I write all my own music, so [the album is] going to be honest," she said. "And I definitely am not just laying around Los Angeles getting drunk with my friends anymore, so it'll definitely be a little different subject matter, but it will still be fun and honest. I'm not done being crazy."
And while it's still really early in the process, Ke$ha's got plenty of ideas floating around for her new album ... and she's already got a pretty solid sense of how the album won't sound.
"I wouldn't say 'mature,' because that sounds boring, that sounds like a jazz record, and that's not going to happen," she laughed. "You'll hear about different things on it. I think there's a great pop song in anything."

Stone Temple Pilots Reunited In Hopes Of Opening For Led Zeppelin, Bassist Says
'If time allows, there will definitely be new music,' Robert DeLeo adds of STP's future.By Chris Harris
Stone Temple Pilots' Robert DeLeo and Scott Weiland

There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.
Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.
On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots' resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band's part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.
"Believe me, that was one of the reasons," laughed DeLeo. "We thought, 'We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.' I'm serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life."
Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as "Mission Impossible." For the band's members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.
"For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by," explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. "After you get bitten, it's hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn't always have with our career when we were younger. If that's all I can say, and that's what I can get out of this reunion, great.
"I think I speak for all of us when I say there's a lot of unfinished business that we didn't get around to the first go," he continued. "Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don't really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I'm just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that's been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it's going to be really amazing."
DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were "sounding as good as ever," and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band's in tip-top shape.
"My brother's going on four years of sobriety," he said. "We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There's a lot more rock in this band now."
As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that's going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.
"I've always got stuff written, and there's always a long list of songs that are always there — it's a matter of timing," DeLeo said. "If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I'd like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know."
While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter's Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?
"You never know," he said. "It's just like STP — I didn't know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That's all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it's great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album]."

Lady Gaga Close To Besting Britney Spears In Twitter Followers
Spears is the world's top tweeter, but Gaga is hot on her heels.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Lady Gaga's near-dominance of all things social media is reaching a pivotal point: Mother Monster is poised to topple Britney Spears as the most-followed Twitter user.
According to the social-media website FameCount, which tracks the most popular entities on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, Spears is the world's top tweeter, with more than 5.6 million followers, but Gaga is right on her heels. As of Thursday afternoon (August 19), Spears' followers numbered 5,646,028, while Gaga's online army of "little monsters" was 5,635,460 strong. The ranking could switch very soon, since Gaga has netted around 600,000 new followers this month, while Spears pulled in about 200,000. The site also lists Gaga as the most popular online entity worldwide, with more than 16 million Facebook fans and 330,000 YouTube subscribers.
Gaga's pre-eminent Twitter status is just the latest milestone marking the pop phenom's powerful viral presence. Last month, Gaga soared past the leader of the free world, President Obama, in Facebook fans. The "Alejandro" singer was also the first living person to notch 10 million fans on the intensely popular social-networking website.
Despite runaway online popularity that rivals her chart-topping music sales, Gaga still has to fend off competition from other pop stars. In July, Justin Bieber bested Gaga for the most-watched music video on YouTube with more than 245,746,720 views for the Ludacris-assisted collabo "Baby." Gaga's futuristic-disco extravaganza "Bad Romance" was close behind with 245,596,709. Bieber has since widened the gap, however, with "Baby" scoring 292,285,435 views to Gaga's 264,533,336 YouTube spins at press time.
Gaga's viral presence is undeniable, but the singer's outsize fan support has yielded results in the form of cold hard cash as well. After circling the globe on her Monster Ball Tour since November of last year, the seat-filling tour is on track to gross $200 million worldwide by April 2011.

Sandra Bullock on How She Kept Her Adoption Process a Secret
In her first TV interview since her divorce from Jesse James, Sandra Bullock opened up to "Today" show host Matt Lauer about how she kept her four-year adoption process a secret from the media.
"He's a little Cajun cookie," the Oscar-winning actress said of her New Orleans-born son Louis Bardo Bullock. "We don't have any boys in our family. Boy, is everyone really happy about that. So, he's like the crown prince."
Bullock revealed in April that she had gone through a four-year adoption process before she was able to bring home baby Louis in January, and she did all this without the media finding out. On how she was able to keep the adoption process a secret from the press, Bullock told Lauer, "It takes-- it takes good people with integrity. I mean, I read something like, how did someone keep a secret, and it's-- you know-- human beings exist that have integrity that know how to keep their mouth shut. ... But I was blessed with the same friends I've had since before things got really special for me and blessed in life."

New Google Voice with widget support surfaces
A few days ago we saw the G2 testing ROM leak, which brought to light a rather interesting new find, widget support in an updated version of Google Voice. Well, many of us were looking for a link, sadly it didn't appear to be just that easy, but that has all changed. Links seem to be flooding the web of locations to download this updated Google Voice onto your device today. If you want to test out the new version, you can download it directly right here. Reports are that it is working great with the exception of the phone dialer button on Sense ROMs, due to the difference in integration, and this coming from a leak, not being an official update. Be sure to check it out, and jump in the forums and let us know what you think! 'Jacare' wins Strikeforce middleweight belt with decision over Kennedy
In the fight that decided the winner of the vacant Strikeforce middleweight belt, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza won a unanimous decision over Tim Kennedy, with the judges cards reading 49-46, 48-47, 48-47. Jacare, known as one of the world's best in jiu-jitsu, kept the first round standing, landing effective strikes in the first round. Kennedy counterpunched, but Jacare had an answer for every offensive move that Kennedy made. That continued into the second round. Jacare wore down Kennedy, though Kennedy did stuff Jacare's takedown attempt. In the third round, Jacare opened up a cut over Kennedy's left eye with a big right hand. Not long after his face started bleeding, Kennedy took Jacare down, but surprisingly, Jacare did not want to stay there. He got out from under Kennedy and brought the fight back to its feet for the rest of the round. In the fourth, Kennedy seemed to land more punches, but they did not cause much damage. With about a minute and a half left in the fourth round, Kennedy landed an indavertent blow to Jacare's groin. Jacare was given time to recover, with while Kennedy's eye continued to bleed. The fight was delayed longer because of a problem with the fight clock. Kennedy's striking improved in the final round, but in the last 30 seconds of the round, Jacare landed two flush strikes that wobbled Kennedy. Kennedy answered with a takedownm bringing Jacare to the ground for a millisecond before Jacare leapt to his feet. After the decision was announced, Kennedy was confused and upset with the call from the judges. "The best grappler in the world couldn't get me down, and I took him down a few times," Kennedy said. "I've said it before. I don't like judges. I won't be here again." The fight was as close as prognosticators expected, but Jacare's striking was effective throughout the match. The grappling expert showed that he is just as comfortable on his feet as he is on the ground, and because of that, he is the newly crowned Strikeforce middleweight champ. Newspaper

Barrett survives detached retina to make it to Bellator 25
Bellator's heavyweight tournament really heats up Thursday night with two more matches in the quarterfinals. Last week, Neil Grove advanced by destroying Eddie Sanchez. Thursday night, the tourney's biggest name, Cole Konrad, is unveiled. The 2006 and 2007 NCAA heavyweight wrestling champ is off to a 4-0 start in his MMA career and has a target on his back. Scott Barrett is one of the guys who wants a crack at Konrad. Getting a fight with Konrad and winning the Bellator tournament would complete a pretty interesting journey for the stocky Barrett. After wrestling four years at Division II Carson-Newman, Barrett decided to pass on getting his master's degree in Special Education and try mixed martial arts. Things were going well, as he started out 6-0, and then a huge punch during a sparring session nearly ended his MMA career. Barrett was working with Brad Baker in Las Vegas. Baker broke his hand when he landed the big punch. Meanwhile, Barrett felt fine until he went through a prefight checkup. Said Barrett via Sherdog.com: "I didn’t really think about the punch again ‘til one of the doctors at the pre-fight checkup asked me if my eyeball had recently suffered any unusual trauma." The doctor told Barrett he'd suffered a detached retina. "These prefight checkups are usually just a formality," sighed Barrett. "And because my vision wasn’t compromised, I had absolutely no idea that my eye was damaged. [...] Yeah, I was more than heartbroken – I was devastated." Barrett certainly couldn't fight with the eye injury. One more shot to eye could cause permanent blindness. So he had to go in for laser surgery to fix the issue. "It was a little spooky ‘cause you’re awake the whole time during the operation,” remembered Barrett. "You sort of stare off at the wall while they burn your retina back into your eye. Immediately afterwards I thought I had gone blind because I was so heavily dilated. But fortunately, the operation was a complete success. My eye’s as good as new now." Barrett (10-1) lost his next fight but has reeled off four straight wins since. His last seven wins have come by stoppage via TKO. He has the look of the underdog, at only 6-foot tall but Barrett walks around in excess of 275 pounds. He takes the big step up Thursday night against Damian Grabowksi, who is considered by some as the best heavyweight prospect right now out of Europe. G-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we'd like to see them try and stop it
digg_url = 'http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/27/g-mate-mag-gun-controller-for-xbox-and-ps3-gets-fcc-approval-we/';
Hopefully you had your Campbell's Chunky Fully Loaded Beef Stew this morning, because it takes a Man to look down the barrel of the G-Mate Mag Gun and live. The weapon just passed through the FCC unscathed, and now it's gunning for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The basic operation is simple enough, with triggers, face buttons, a d-pad and everything else you'd need to ape a modern console controller. There's only one analog nub, but that's of course because the gun's own motion is meant to emulate the second. G-Mate isn't so clear on how that part of the gun works, but from what we can glean, it's basically an accelerometer and / or gyroscope, which you calibrate to the center of your particular screen with a dedicated button. A sensitivity knob completes the Mag Gun-specific functionality -- which probably won't revolutionize the FPS genre, but certainly might give those suspicious of the Move or too masculine for the XCM Fire something to watch out for. Check out some videos of it in action after the break.Continue reading G-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we'd like to see them try and stop itG-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we'd like to see them try and stop it originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 12:45:00 EDT. Dell Tries To Wedge Its Way Into the Smartphone Space
Late to the party. That may be an appropriate way to characterize Dells push into the smartphone market. However, the company has some strong traits that may make its products a viable option for small and medium businesses.

Court reaffirms: fourth amendment rights not violated if the police install a GPS device on your car when it's not in your garage
Back in January, a court in Portland, Oregon ruled that the Fourth Amendment rights of one Juan Pineda-Moreno had not been violated by the police when they tracked him using various GPS devices they installed on the underside of his Jeep with magnets. You see, the police suspected that Pineda-Moreno was growing Marijuana somewhere, and they really didn't like that. Eventually, Pineda-Moreno was arrested and convicted of crimes involving the growth of said Marijuana -- but he appealed the decision because he thought that his Fourth Amendment rights (the one which guards against unreasonable search and seizure) had been violated. The appeals court has recently upheld the original decision, but there were five dissenting votes, meaning that the case is anything but cut and dried. Now, what's obvious is that the police didn't have to traverse into "private" space to attach the tracking device to the suspect's car, but clearly it's debatable -- even as far as the judges are concerned -- what constitutes private and public space. The case is surely not going to end here, so we'll keep you updated. In the meantime, watch your back.Court reaffirms: fourth amendment rights not violated if the police install a GPS device on your car when it's not in your garage originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 13:54:00 EDT. LaCie Rikiki Go external HDD features 1TB storage, new and improved monkey
How do you differentiate one portable HDD from the next? Well, let's see: You can bump the storage capacity up to 1TB. Or you can give the monkey a mohawk. Yep, that's pretty much it! The Rikiki Go supports USB 2.0, sports an aluminum case, and is available now (with 1TB capacity) for $150. There is also a 500GB version that's not yet in stock, but will be at some point for $90. PR after the break.Continue reading LaCie Rikiki Go external HDD features 1TB storage, new and improved monkeyLaCie Rikiki Go external HDD features 1TB storage, new and improved monkey originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 28 Aug 2010 04:40:00 EDT. INSIDE MOBILE: Why Intel's Acquisition of McAfee Is Important for Mobile
Intel announced its acquisition of McAfee last week. This could be significant for the mobile market, as mobile security is becoming more important to both enterprise customers and consumers. Here, Knowledge Center mobile and wireless analyst J. Gerry Purdy discusses the significance of Intel's acquisition of McAfee for the increasingly competitive wireless handheld market. - You have to hand it to firms such as Intel and Microsoft. When they are determined to succeed in a new market, they try and try again and if that doesn't work, then they go out and buy their way into the market. Last week, Intel announced the acquisition of McAfee, a successful security software co...
